Internal UKCCSC News and Announcements

A reminder that registration is open for the UKCCSC Biannual Meeting and Carbon Capture and Storage Conference, hosted by UKCCSC and IPA, which takes place at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh from 1-2 September. If you are part of the academic community or a non-industry affiliate, registration is available via our website. During the registration process, you can indicate whether you would like to display a poster at the conference (we still have space for more posters!). Further details regarding the conference can also be found on the registration page.

If you are an industry representative, to register please contact Helen Tulloch at IPA (h.tulloch@ipa-scotland.org.uk).

Academic members of the UK Carbon Capture Storage Community Network can receive a 15% discount at The Reform of the UK Electricity Market Summit, which will take place in London on 6th September following the publication of DECC's white paper in July 2011. Full details can be found here.

The Eni Award promotes better use of energy sources, to promote research on the environment and to help to develop new generations of researchers. The 2012 Edition of the Eni Award has been now launched and the rules and regulations and candidature proposal forms are available here. The call for proposal process is open to those who meet the criteria defined in the Regulations and Announcements. The deadline for the submission of the candidatures falls on the 28th of October 2011, no later than 5.00 pm CET (Central European Time). National and International News

1) Ever worried about leaking wells? You are not alone?

"Guideline for the risk management of existing wells at CO2 geological storage sites" DNV (Det Norske Veritas)

2) "Richland Community College [Illinois, USA] plans to break ground July 20 for the National Sequestration Education Center, which will award the world's first degree in carbon capture and sequestration." Herald & Review (Jul 20)

I guess it is the first degree of that exact name, as the University of Edinburgh calls its 2 year-old Masters Degree "Carbon Capture and Storage".

3) More transport news, with the old ?caverns measureless to man? error:

"National Grid is consulting with communities along the possible pipeline route"..."from a West Yorkshire power station to storage caverns in the North Sea" Bridlington Free Press (25 July)

"At this stage the National Grid is holding a series of 16 public exhibitions and consultations along the route."

4) "Greens capture $10bn fund" The Australian (13 July)

"the $10bn [Australian] Clean Energy Finance Corporation, which Labor negotiated with the Greens as part of gaining their support for the carbon tax, excludes funding for CCS."

Needless to say, not everyone was happy with this:

"Coal Sector Reveals Flaws in Gillard's Carbon Package" International Business Times (14 July)

"...it is not only the environment that will lose out with Australia's Gross National Income up to 0.5% less if CCS is not developed, he [Ralph Hillman, Executive Director the Australian Coal Association] said."

5) Bad news from the Mountaineer CCS scheme, USA:

"American Electric Power Co Inc on Thursday shelved plans to capture heat-trapping carbon dioxide emissions from a coal-burning power plant in West Virginia"

and here's the surprising bit (to me anyway):

AEP "...has returned a $334 million federal grant" Charleston Daily Mail (18 Jul)

6) "BP-Backed Energy Group Spends $38 Million on U.K. Carbon Capture" Bloomberg (19 Jul)

The Energy Technologies Institute "...will work with U.K. engineering company Costain Group Plc to construct a pilot plant at a coal-fired power station ... built, operated and tested by mid-2015."

7) A transport story with a difference:

"RWE npower has begun construction work on a carbon capture demonstration plant at Aberthaw Power Station [UK}, and some very large components will be transported from Barry Docks to the site..." Barry And District News (25 July)

8) "Alberta signs third carbon-capture deal with coal-to-gas project" The Canadian Press (27 July)

"Synfuels expects to ship about 1.3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide every year for injection into and permanent storage in area oil wells, which is expected to generate between 80 and 100 million barrels of oil..."

According to my back-of-the-envelope calculation, they will need to inject 1.3 Mt/year of CO2 for 20 - 25 years to balance burning all that oil?

9)University of ?Montana launches $85 million carbon storage project? Reuters (27 Jul)

"...geologists have targeted Kevin Dome, a subterranean rock formation in the north-central part of the state that stretches for 700 square miles (1,800 sq km) and has trapped naturally occurring carbon dioxide for millions of years"

10) "China's Climate Minister Speaks in Support of Carbon Capture and Storage" WRI (28 Jul)

The article includes suggestions for the direction of CCS development worldwide.
