UKCCSC News21 January 2011

Hi Folks,

UKCCSC Items:

Don’t forget to register for our next biannual meeting in Cornwall, 5-6 April 2011. The first day’s plenary talks will have a marine environment theme, and the second day will have a few technical session options for you. A draft agenda will be posted soon. REGISTER HERE

International CCS News:

Bad news for public perception fromthe Weyburn-Midale CO2-EOR project, Canada. Worth reading both pages, there’s some science buried in there somewhere.

“Carbon capture project leaking into their land, couple says” The Globe and Mail (11 Jan)

Here’s the response to the story by the Petroleum Technology Research Centre, the technical manager of the Weyburn Project:

“Based on the extensive scientific research conducted by the IEAGHG Weyburn-Midale CO2 Monitoring & Storage Project, no results have been found that would support the recently reported conclusion that CO2 injected as part of the CO2-EOR Project has migrated through the geological storage system to the surface.”-

2) Just missed this before Xmas:

“New UK gas plant will not have to capture carbon for now says DECC” Power-Gen Worldwide (Dec 16)

“Britain is to introduce an Emissions Performance Standard (EPS) effectively banning construction of new coal plant without demonstrating carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology, but new gas fired stations will not be required to capture carbon emissions for the time being.”

The World Wildlife Fund’s view is here, they are generally pro-CCS. They favour a tighter EPS (i.e. a lower emission per unit of power generated):

3) “Ayrshire Power forms CCS consortium” for the proposed Hunterston thermal power-station. Power-gen worldwide (15 Dec)

“The consortium brings APL together with carbon capture and power solutions provider Doosan Power Systems, engineering and construction company, Fluor Limited and Petrofac”

5) Always good to be the biggest or best: “World's largest carbon capture plant done” UPI.com (Dec 13)

“An $86 million expansion to a carbon-capture plant in [LaBarge] Wyoming” … takes CO2 from natural gas ready for market, used for EOR.

6) “Earthshaking Possibilities May Limit Underground Storage of Carbon Dioxide” ScienceDaily (Dec 15)

“While those earthquakes are unlikely to be big enough to hurt people or property…” they still make good copy…

Early Career Researchers:

A new post doc advert for a storage scientist in Sheffield has been posted. Link

There are lots of summer schools out there with Energy/CCS themes and now is the time to start applying. UKERC has just opened registration for theirs, so please do check it out. Link
